Sri Lanka’s boys’ and girls’ rugby sevens teams are set to compete in the Asia Rugby Under-18 Sevens Championship, which will be played in China today and tomorrow, with the country’s rising stars aiming to make their mark against the continent’s best young talent.
The boys’ tournament features nine teams divided into two groups. Sri Lanka has been drawn in a challenging Group A alongside Hong Kong China, Malaysia and India, while Group B consists of hosts China, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the UAE.
The Sri Lankan boys’ outfit will be captained by Mohamed Fawaz and coached by Rajeew Perera, with Bhanuka Nanayakkara serving as assistant coach and Imran Thalagampe as team manager.
The side will be looking to produce strong performances against experienced regional rivals and challenge for a place in the knockout stages.
The girls’ competition will feature eight teams split into two groups. Sri Lanka is placed in Group C with China, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, while Group D includes Hong Kong China, India, Malaysia and the UAE.
Ayusha Jeewamani will lead the Sri Lankan girls’ team under the guidance of head coach Shamly Nawas, assisted by Asela Deshapriya, with Thilini Senanayake serving as team manager. (SJ)
