Work with Lakbima News
Good journalism starts with people who are curious enough to ask another question.

Lakbima News works across breaking news, public affairs, politics, business, investigations, sport, science, technology and lifestyle. We are interested in people who can find stories, verify information and explain what they discover clearly.

Experience matters, but so do judgement, curiosity and the ability to work carefully with evidence.

We are not looking for people who simply repeat what has already been published. We value reporters and contributors who can find the missing detail, question the obvious answer and show readers where the evidence leads.

Where you could work with us

01 / REPORTING

News & reporting

Cover national affairs, courts, communities, politics, business and developing stories across Sri Lanka.

02 / INVESTIGATIONS

Investigations & data

Work with public records, statistics, documents and sources to examine stories that need more than a daily headline.

03 / REGIONAL

Regional contributors

Report from communities outside the main Colombo news cycle and bring local developments to a national audience.

04 / VISUAL

Photo & video

Produce original photography, field video and visual reporting that adds information rather than decoration.

05 / DIGITAL

Digital & social

Help package journalism for digital audiences without reducing serious reporting to clickbait.

06 / EARLY CAREER

Internships & training

Opportunities may be available for students and early-career journalists looking for practical newsroom experience.

Current opportunities

Vacancies and assignments will be listed here when available.

You do not need to wait for a vacancy to introduce yourself. We welcome expressions of interest from journalists, photographers, researchers, regional contributors and people with specialist subject knowledge.

Express your interest

What matters in our newsroom

Accuracy before speed Being first has little value if the information is wrong. Facts should be checked before publication.
Evidence over assumption Claims should be supported by documents, reliable sources, direct reporting or information that can be independently checked.
Ask another question The first answer is not always the whole story. We value curiosity and reporters who notice what has not been explained.
Write for readers Clear reporting beats unnecessary jargon. Readers should understand what happened, why it matters and where the information came from.
Protect editorial independence Advertising and sponsored material are kept separate from editorial decision-making and identified clearly.
Correct mistakes Journalism is accountable to its readers. Factual errors should be corrected when they are identified.

What to send us

For editorial roles or contributor work

  • A short introduction explaining the type of work you are interested in.
  • Your CV or a concise outline of your experience.
  • Links to published work, reporting, photography or other relevant examples.
  • The subjects or parts of Sri Lanka you know particularly well.
  • If you are pitching as a contributor, one or two story ideas are welcome.

We care more about the work than the presentation.

A simple application with strong reporting examples is more useful than a heavily designed CV.

If you do not yet have published journalism, tell us what you would like to cover and show us how you approach research, writing or gathering information.

How applications are considered

STEP 01 Send your details

Introduce yourself and include the material relevant to the work you want to do.

STEP 02 Editorial review

Suitable applications are reviewed against current newsroom and contributor needs.

STEP 03 Conversation

Selected applicants may be contacted to discuss experience, availability and potential assignments.

STEP 04 Next steps

Any assignment, role, test or working arrangement will be discussed directly with the applicant.

Have a story rather than a job application?

Freelance journalists and contributors can also approach the editorial desk with a specific story proposal. Tell us what the story is, why it matters and what reporting you can bring to it.

Pitch a story

Before you apply

Anyone working on editorial material for Lakbima News is expected to follow the publication’s standards on accuracy, sourcing, corrections, conflicts of interest and separation of editorial and sponsored material.
