The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal from the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to finish remaining road works that will improve access to the Homagama, Pitipana and Mahenawatta Tech City project, the Cabinet said in a statement.
The Tech City initiative aims to develop technology and research activity in the area; the government has presented it as part of efforts to increase exports and employment.
Construction of the western bypass from Homagama Walawwatte to Kotuwana began in 2020 to reduce traffic in Homagama town and provide direct access to the Tech City. Officials say about 50 metres remain to link it to the High Level Road.
Plans also call for an internal access road linking the Pitipana–Dampe Road with the Kottawa–Talagala Road, running from the University of Sri Lanka campus to the Sri Lanka Institute of Biotechnology. About 650 metres of that section remain unfinished, the ministry said.
Both the bypass connection and the biotechnology access road will be completed using domestic funds, the Cabinet noted. The ministry has not provided a firm completion date.(Lakbima News)
