Electricity supply was disrupted in several parts of Sri Lanka on Saturday, October 17, with consumers reporting unexpected outages across multiple districts.
Reports of interruptions emerged from Colombo and its suburbs, including Mount Lavinia, Wellawatte, Dehiwala, Kohuwala, Maradana and Battaramulla. Residents also reported outages in Negombo, Wennapuwa, Katana, Wattala, Kelaniya, Panadura, Kurunegala and Ratnapura.
The locations were identified through publicly shared consumer reports. The hotline for the electricity board also seems to not be functioning anymore as we ourselves have verified it. Their individual outage status and restoration times have not been independently confirmed by the electricity authorities.
The cause of the disruption remains unclear. No confirmed technical explanation or comprehensive breakdown of the affected electricity network was available at the time of reporting.
The extent of the interruption also remains undetermined, including whether the reported outages originated from a single transmission incident or separate faults affecting different parts of the distribution network.
Saturday’s disruption coincided with a Department of Meteorology forecast warning of showers and thunderstorms across much of the country after 1 p.m.
The department’s forecast, issued at 5.30 a.m., warned that rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres could occur in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Central provinces, as well as the Trincomalee and Mullaitivu districts.
It also advised the public to take precautions against lightning and temporary strong winds associated with thunderstorms. However, no official evidence has established a connection between the forecast weather conditions and the electricity interruptions.
Consumers can check supply interruptions through the official CEB power interruption portal or contact the electricity service hotline on 1987. We did attempt multiple times to get a hold of an operator while it has repeatedly failed.
The number of affected consumers and the expected time for full restoration remain unconfirmed.
