Lakbima News Exclusive Interview

Brazilian artist and social media personality Erica Lanka has revealed that her growing popularity in Sri Lanka has come with financial sacrifices, criticism over sensitive subjects and a personal attachment to the country that began long before she became an online sensation.

In an exclusive written interview with Lakbima News, Erica described how an ordinary holiday destination became the centre of her creative career, why she turned down commercial partnerships and how Sri Lankan followers gave her the name by which she is now known.

Her account also sheds light on the controversy surrounding her videos about Sri Lanka’s civil war and Colombo’s Lotus Tower, subjects she chose to explore despite warnings that they could attract criticism.

Erica, who was born in Brazil and has lived in Portugal for seven years, said she had visited Sri Lanka two or three times as a tourist before returning in July 2026.

During those earlier visits, she developed a feeling of belonging that she struggled to explain.

“Deep inside my heart, I kept hearing a little voice telling me, ‘Erica, you belong here.'”

When she later decided to take a break from her everyday life in Portugal, Sri Lanka was her immediate choice.

The followers who gave her a new name

One of the more personal revelations in the interview concerns the origin of the name Erica Lanka.

According to Erica, the name was suggested by Sri Lankan followers during her first weeks on social media. She had initially opened an Instagram account to share photographs and videos with family and friends who knew little about the country.

As strangers began following her experiences, several started referring to her as Erica Lanka in their comments.

“Actually, I didn’t invent the name Erica Lanka myself. It was given to me by the people who started following my journey.”

She subsequently researched the meaning and significance of Lanka before deciding to adopt the name publicly.

For Erica, the decision carried a responsibility to the people whose country she had come to admire.

“I didn’t choose this name because I thought it would make me successful,” she said. “The people gave me this name, and that is exactly why it means so much to me.”

Her family initially questioned her attachment to Sri Lanka

Erica acknowledged that her enthusiasm for Sri Lanka was not immediately understood by those closest to her.

Her family and friends repeatedly asked why she had become so attached to the island. She said some people in Brazil associated Sri Lanka primarily with poverty, crime and its civil war, making it difficult for them to understand her experiences.

Her family eventually visited Sri Lanka in August 2026, an experience she described as a turning point.

“They could see the country with their own eyes, meet the people and experience the kindness and warmth that had touched me so deeply,” she said.

The visit helped her family understand her attachment to the country, she added.

“I first fell in love with the beauty of this island, but it was the people who made my heart want to stay.”

Financial sacrifices behind an independent career

Erica’s popularity has grown rapidly since she began publishing videos on 2 July 2026.

She said her videos received more than 50 million views within their first 90 days, starting from an account with no followers. The audience figure was supplied by Erica and her management and has not been independently audited by Lakbima News.

The growth has placed increasing demands on her time and finances.

“Financially, yes, I have pushed myself to my limits more than once.”

Erica said she has financed her projects personally and has deliberately rejected paid sponsorships, advertising partnerships and complimentary hotel accommodation offered in exchange for publicity.

Her decision has allowed her to retain control over the places and experiences she chooses to feature, she explained.

“I don’t want someone telling me how to present a place or what to say just because they are paying me.”

One particularly expensive undertaking was a dress inspired by Colombo’s Lotus Tower, which she designed herself and had specially developed.

The garment is expected to accompany her on upcoming visits to Portugal and Brazil, alongside traditional Sri Lankan saris.

The civil war video that brought harsh criticism

Erica identified two projects that attracted especially strong reactions.

The first was a video titled From War to Paradise, in which she discussed Sri Lanka’s civil war and the country’s subsequent recovery.

She said she understood the sensitivity of the subject before publishing the video but was surprised by the hostility of some responses.

“Some reactions were extremely harsh. I was even accused of trying to start another civil war simply because I had spoken about the subject.”

Erica maintained that her intention was to discuss the effects of the conflict and the lives of people rebuilding after years of suffering.

Her description of the criticism reflects her own experience. Lakbima News has not independently reviewed the full range of public reactions to the video.

Why she refused to abandon her Lotus Tower project

Her second experience with public criticism involved Colombo’s Lotus Tower.

Erica said people warned her about the political and financial controversies associated with the structure before she developed her musical tribute.

She went ahead with the project because she admired the building’s design and appearance, particularly its illumination at night.

“Some people asked why I was celebrating a building they associated with problems and controversy,” she said.

“But my love for the Lotus Tower has nothing to do with politics.”

She subsequently wrote Lotus Tower – Feeling the Power, which became one of her most widely viewed musical projects.

According to Erica, videos and posts associated with the song attracted more than 14 million views in two weeks, although independent platform data has not yet been supplied to verify the total.

The song has since become the centrepiece of her forthcoming first stage performance in Portugal.

A mother protecting her family life

Erica also discussed an aspect of her life that she had previously kept largely private.

She is the mother of a four-year-old daughter, Patricia, who occasionally appears behind the scenes during her creative work.

Erica said her daughter enjoys watching her performances and sometimes imitates her movements or dances while videos are being recorded.

Those experiences inspired her to write a song dedicated to Patricia.

The project marked the first time she publicly disclosed that she had a daughter, something she had avoided earlier to maintain a separation between her artistic career and family life.

“I want people to enjoy my music and my love for Sri Lanka, but I also want my daughter to enjoy being a child.”

First performance in Portugal, followed by a journey to Brazil

Erica is scheduled to make her first stage appearance on 7 November at Rota 94 Lisboa in Cacém, Greater Lisbon.

She told Lakbima News that the invitation followed news of her planned return to Portugal, where she has lived for the past seven years.

She plans to travel there on 31 October and spend approximately a week meeting friends and acquaintances before continuing to Brazil by cruise ship.

The organisers invited her to perform her Lotus Tower song on 7 November, one day before her scheduled departure.

“It will be my very first stage performance ever,” she said.

She has also received invitations for meetings in Portugal and Brazil connected with Sri Lanka and cultural exchange, although she did not identify the organisations involved.

Erica confirmed that she intends to return to Sri Lanka after her travels and would welcome an opportunity to perform her music before a Sri Lankan audience.

“After my first performance in Portugal, it would be something very special to present my music here too, in front of the people who have welcomed and supported me so warmly from the beginning,” she said.

Her immediate plans will take her across Europe and back to Brazil, with music inspired by Sri Lanka accompanying her journey.

“Sri Lanka, my love, our story is far from over!”
