A remarkable chapter in the life and sporting journey of Sri Lanka’s world-renowned javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has been captured in a special book, offering readers a deeper look into the athlete behind the record-breaking performances that have placed Sri Lanka firmly on the world athletics map.
Titled “Adhishtanaye Ran Salakuna – Rumesh” (“The Golden Mark of Determination – Rumesh”), the book was compiled by Chulabhaya Herath, who has documented the athlete’s journey, struggles, determination and rise to the highest levels of international athletics.
The publication was officially launched at a special ceremony in Colombo attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, together with a distinguished gathering of sports personalities, officials, well-wishers, members of the media and other invitees.
The launch comes at a defining point in Tharanga’s career. The 23-year-old athlete has enjoyed a phenomenal 2026 season, establishing himself as one of the leading javelin throwers in the world. His 92.62m throw at the Rome Diamond League earlier this year remains a landmark performance in his career and made him only the fourth Asian man to surpass the 90-metre barrier.
He subsequently went on to create further history on the international circuit, winning the Diamond League title before adding the World Athletics Ultimate Championship crown to his growing list of achievements. His performances have generated unprecedented attention for Sri Lankan athletics and have made him one of the country’s most prominent sporting figures.
However, the book goes beyond statistics, records and medals. It seeks to portray the human story behind the athlete—the sacrifices, discipline, setbacks, determination and unwavering ambition that have shaped Tharanga’s rise from a young sporting talent into a global javelin star.
His journey is particularly remarkable because athletics was not initially his only sporting ambition. Tharanga was a promising schoolboy fast bowler before making the transition to javelin, a change that ultimately transformed his sporting career.
The presence of the Sports Minister and a gathering of distinguished personalities at the launch underlined the significance attached to Tharanga’s achievements and his growing importance to Sri Lankan sport.
For the sporting community, the book provides more than a record of one athlete’s achievements. It preserves a moment in Sri Lankan sporting history—a story of ambition, perseverance and the pursuit of excellence on the world stage.
With Tharanga already setting his sights on the 2028 Olympics and beyond, “Adhishtanaye Ran Salakuna – Rumesh” may ultimately prove to be the story of only one chapter in what promises to be a much longer sporting journey.
For now, however, it provides Sri Lanka with an opportunity to pause and celebrate the extraordinary journey of an athlete who has dared to throw farther—and dream bigger.
