Sri Lanka player Prabath Jayasuriya was given an official reprimand after the second day of the second Test against India at the SSC on Monday, according to the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
The referee found Jayasuriya in breach of Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.” The referee’s report, issued by the ICC and circulated to media, records the finding.
One demerit point was added to Jayasuriya’s disciplinary record. This is his first offence within a 24-month period, the match referee noted. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum fine of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points under ICC rules (see ICC Code of Conduct, Article 2).
The incident took place after Jayasuriya was dismissed with the final delivery of the day; witnesses and the match report state he struck the boundary wedges with his bat while returning to the pavilion.
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft, so the referee did not hold a formal hearing. On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella reported the matter to the referee, the report says.
