Gateway, an early adopter of Jolly Phonics in Sri Lanka, with around two decades of experience using the programme, has signed an official partnership with Jolly Learning, UK, to expand its early childhood and primary literacy work in the country.
Jolly Phonics is a synthetic phonics programme used in schools in several countries. It uses a multi-sensory approach—letter sounds, actions and structured lesson sequences—to teach reading and writing to young children.
A partnership built around quality
Under the agreement, Gateway will have access to Jolly Learning’s teaching materials, digital tools and professional development pathways, Gateway Group said in a statement. The organisation says the arrangement will allow it to introduce the programme in Sri Lanka within a defined framework and training plan.
As part of preparations, members of the Gateway team attended training sessions in Hyderabad, India, where Jolly Learning trainers provided classroom demonstrations and practical instruction, Gateway Group said.
Jolly Phonics to be accessible across the country
From January 2027, Gateway will roll out the Jolly Learning programme in Sri Lanka through its chain of kindergartens, Seven Cs by Gateway, its activity centres BigSpark by Gateway and a network of Jolly Learning partners across the country, Gateway Group said.
The programme will initially be available at Gateway centres in Borella, Moratuwa, Athurugiriya, Piliyandala, Nugegoda and Battaramulla.
Building strong foundations
Reading and writing skills affect a child’s progress across subjects. Gateway says the partnership includes teacher training components intended to strengthen classroom delivery of the Jolly Phonics method. The group describes the initiative as part of its ongoing work to bring internationally used literacy practices to Sri Lankan classrooms.
