Four people, including a 25-year-old man and three women, drowned while bathing in the Maha Oya in the Peragahamankada area of Badalgama on Saturday, police said.

Police launched a search operation with the assistance of area residents after receiving information that the four had gone missing in the water. Their bodies were later recovered.

The deceased man was a 25-year-old resident of Ohiya, while the three women, aged 19, 20 and 28, were residents of Demodara.

Investigations revealed that all four were employed at a private establishment within the Badalgama Police Division.

The bodies have been placed at the Negombo Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Badalgama Police are conducting further investigations.
