  • International road race set for 13 September at Galle Face Stadium, featuring full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km Fun Run categories

The Cabinet of Ministers has considered and approved proposals for the staging of the ‘Colombo Marathon – 2026’, an international marathon competition planned as part of celebrations marking the 50th National Games.

The event, jointly organised by the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry, the Department of Sports Development and other relevant institutions, is scheduled to take place at the Galle Face Stadium, Colombo, on 13 September 2026.

Organisers expect a large turnout of both national and international competitors, with the competition structured across four categories: a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10km run, and a 5km Fun Run — the latter aimed at drawing wider public participation beyond competitive runners.

The Cabinet’s approval covered proposals put forward by the Youth Affairs and Sports Minister on the competition’s implementation plan, the prize money to be awarded to winners across the various categories, and the routes on which the race will be held.
