Tamil Union moved closer to a quarter-final place in the Major Clubs T20 tournament with a fourth straight win, beating Police SC by seven wickets at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday to top Group A. Match scorecards show leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth finished with 4-11 as Police were dismissed for 134. Sineth Jayawardena chased the target, scoring 84 off 52 balls (7 fours, 4 sixes) as Tamil Union reached the total with 24 balls remaining.
In Group B, Ace Capital CC and Panadura SC kept their quarter-final hopes alive with wins over Badureliya CC and NCC respectively. Panadura beat NCC by two runs at Colts Grounds. Former Sri Lanka opener Oshada Fernando made 63 off 45 balls (six fours, two sixes) as Panadura posted 142-9. Chamika Gunasekara took 4-17 for NCC. In reply, NCC were 99-6 before Chamika Karunaratne added 56 off 45 balls (2 fours, 4 sixes) to help the team reach 139; they needed three off the final ball but managed only a single, the last batsman run out, according to the official scorecard.
Ace Capital improved their net run rate with a 73-run win over Badureliya CC at the P. Sara Oval. Skipper Pawantha Weerasinghe scored 50 off 33 balls (7 fours) as Ace Capital posted 164-6. Badureliya were bowled out for 91; the wicket-taker was 18-year-old right-arm seamer Rachintha de Silva of Thurstan College, who finished with 4-10 on the scorecard.
Nugegoda SWC and Kurunegala YCC produced a tie under the DLS method at the same venue after rain reduced the game to eight overs. Nugegoda made 67-5. The DLS revision set Kurunegala a target of 76 in eight overs; they finished 75-6. Leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage took 4-13 for Nugegoda, as shown on the match sheet.
