
Venerable Battaramulle Seelarathana Thera, leader of the Janasetha Front, was assaulted this morning at a temple in Weeragula, according to people who were there.
Assault in Weeragula: what happened at the Warana temple
Lakbima News has learned the incident occurred while the Thera was attending a meeting about funeral arrangements at the Warana temple in Attanagalla. Those at the meeting say a verbal argument turned physical.
Witnesses said the attacker ran off on foot immediately after the scuffle. Neighbours and temple-goers rushed in to help and later gave information to police about what they saw.
Medical treatment and police investigation
Gampaha Hospital confirmed the Thera is receiving treatment for injuries from the assault. Hospital staff declined to provide further medical details to protect patient privacy.
Weeragula police say they have opened an inquiry, are taking statements and are reviewing available CCTV. Officers described the suspect as leaving the scene on foot and continue to search the area.
