President Anura Kumara Disanayecke told on Thursday (3) that if the amendments were required to tackle drug trafficking and organised crime and restore public safety, his government had no qualms about proposing constitutional amendments.
Addressing the 160th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police, he said that necessary measures had been taken to expedite the judicial process in bringing suspects before court but there remain delays between arrest and sentencing.
Mr Rattenbury said police also conducted a record number of drug raids in the past two years. He argued that if prosecutions and sentencing still take years, arrests are of little use at all.
Punishment of crimes, the president said, is delayed and criminals are aware of such delay; hence, it requires for all related organs of criminal justice to coordinate better. He even smiled and said: The law cannot take its turn in queue.
We already have laws aimed at simplifying procedures, and in the public interest we will pursue everything that must be changed from the constitution, said the president.
“We won’t hesitate to amend the Constitution, if necessary,” he said. (Lakbima News)
