President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the government plans to introduce a new uniform for Sri Lanka Police by the middle of 2027 as part of broader efforts to modernize the service.
The President said discussions have already taken place with the Inspector General of Police on changing the existing police uniform to better suit the requirements of a modern police service.
He said the IGP has been instructed to engage a professional fashion design company to develop an appropriate new uniform.
The proposed uniform is expected to accommodate equipment required by modern police officers, including body cameras, batons, torches, handcuffs and other essential gear.
“We need to rebuild the police with a uniform suited to the modern era,” the President said.
President Dissanayake said the uniform change would form part of a wider transformation of Sri Lanka Police involving improvements to human resources, infrastructure, technology, training and working conditions.
He also announced plans to introduce a risk allowance for police officers from January, while addressing long-standing concerns over promotions within the service.
The government has also approved the recruitment of 10,000 personnel to address shortages that have resulted in some police officers working shifts of between 12 and 18 hours, according to the President.
Other planned investments include new motorcycles and single cabs for operational duties, modernization of police facilities and funding for new buildings for the Police Headquarters and Criminal Investigation Department.
The President said the objective was to transform Sri Lanka Police into a modern and respected service equipped with the personnel, technology and infrastructure required to perform its duties effectively. (Newswire)
