President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government plans to introduce a new uniform for the Sri Lanka Police by mid‑2027 as part of an overall update of the service.
He told reporters that he has discussed the issue with the Inspector General of Police and asked the IGP to hire a fashion design firm to draw up suitable proposals.
The design brief will include practical needs: pockets and fittings for body cameras, batons, torches, handcuffs and other standard equipment used on duty.
“We need a uniform suited to the modern era,” the President said. The comment came as part of a wider programme the Presidency published outlining measures for the police.
Those measures cover human resources, buildings, technology, training and improvements to working conditions. A statement from the Presidential Secretariat listed the recruitment target and other items announced by the President.
The government plans to introduce a risk allowance for police officers from January and to address long-standing promotion issues within the service.
To reduce excessive hours, the President said the government has approved the recruitment of 10,000 personnel. He said some officers have been working shifts of 12 to 18 hours because of staff shortages.
Other items approved include new motorcycles and single-cab vehicles for operations, upgrades to police facilities, and funding for new buildings for Police Headquarters and the Criminal Investigation Department.
