The Supreme Court finished hearings on petitions challenging the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Supreme Court determination on the 22nd amendment
The court said its written determination on the constitutionality of the 22nd Amendment will be sent to the Speaker of Parliament and kept confidential until it reaches the Speaker’s office, as the constitution requires. The Supreme Court confirmed this to Lakbima News.
Legal challenges and petitions against the 22A bill
Several petitioners asked the court to strike down specific clauses. They argued those clauses would change the balance between branches of government and affect parliamentary procedure, citing what they say are inconsistencies with existing constitutional text. The petitions set out the legal grounds and requested the sections be removed or amended.
Next steps: Speaker to receive and announce the decision
With deliberations complete, the court finalised its review and prepared a written determination. Under the constitution, the Speaker must receive that document and table it in Parliament. Once tabled, members will follow the procedure for constitutional amendments and consider the court’s findings before taking further action.
The case now moves to Parliament, where lawmakers will decide how to proceed. Lakbima News will follow developments when the Speaker presents the determination and Parliament schedules its response — and we will report confirmed documents and official dates as they are made available. Expect debate, questions and more detailed scrutiny in committee, and yes, plenty of discussion over tea.
