Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court on Thursday (3) postponed further hearing of 15 petitions challenging the constitutionality of amendments to the Anti-Corruption Bill presented by the government to Parliament.
The petitions were taken up before a three-judge bench comprising Justices Shiran Guneratne, Mahinda Samayawardhena and Sampath Wijeratne.
The petitioners, including former minister G.L. Peiris, have asked the court to rule that the proposed legislation requires approval at a referendum before it can be enacted.
During Thursday’s proceedings, lawyers for the petitioners argued that provisions of the bill could affect fundamental rights and the powers of the judiciary.
The petitioners’ lawyers concluded their initial submissions on Thursday, with further arguments due to be presented when the case resumes on Friday (4). (Newswire)
