Former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, alias Pillayan, along with two Army intelligence informants, has been ordered to remain in remand custody until September 15.
The directive was issued today by the Acting Magistrate of Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court via Zoom technology.
The case stems from a series of incidents in 2008, including the shooting of two people, one a police officer, in Kalladi, the killing of two individuals including a TMVP party member in Kattankudy, and the abduction and murder of a businessman in the Vavunativu–Kareiyan Kandy area.
Pillayan and informants Mohamed Sifan and Mohamed Sakeed were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in November 2025 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
On June 17, 2026, the CID filed cases against them and Mohamed Faiz, a London resident, making four accused in total. Since then, the suspects have been continuously remanded.
During today’s hearing, Pillayan, Sifan, and Sakeed were produced from prison via Zoom.
After reviewing submissions, the Acting Magistrate ordered their continued remand until September 15 and re‑issued an open warrant against Faiz, who remains absconding in London. (Newswire)
